Kandy- Degaldoruwa Temple

Degaldoruwa Raja Maha Viharaya is a small Buddhist  temple of Mahanuwara (Kandy) Kingdom and is well known for its unique wall paintings. It was believed to be built by the two kings, Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe and Rajadhirajasinghe. Legends say King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe initiated the construction  and King Rajadhirajasinghe completed it. The paintings had been done by famous artists of the era as Dewaragampola Silwaththena. Most of the paintings consist of Jathaka stories and they reflect the social background of the era. There are two routes to reach this place. One is via Lewella Bridge and other route is via Katugastota- waththegama road. Cross the Lewella Bridge and proceed towards Lewella until you come across the name board. The route via Waththegama is little difficult to follow. Take the Kundasale road and turn left at Narampothana. All the paintings are over the walls and the roof  of the image house , which had been built by breaking the rock.
