Nillaggama

Nillaggama Bodhi Garaya, situated in a very remote and isolated area of Galgamuwa in Kurunegala  District is one of the most important pieces of ancient architecture. Constructed completely out of stone it consists of attractive stone carvings. It is considered as the only remaining Bodhi garaya (structure surrounding the Bo Tree) in Sri Lanka.  Nillaggama is not a popular place among local tourists possibly due to difficulty in access.

From Galgamuwa town take the Moragollagama road to the right. Travel up to the name board of the BimPokuna temple which is hardly seen on the left. Travel along this road and you will come up to the BimPokuna Temple. Take instructions from there as you have to travel along small paths from this point and there are no sign boards. It is really a jungle side with a lot of different types of birds and plants. Nillaggama is situated close to a nice tank and in a very calm and a peaceful atmosphere. There is a caretaker appointed by the archeological department who comes up with valuable details about the site. He has kept the place tidy and clean amidst of various difficulties.
