Dedigama Kotawehera

Dedigama Kotawehera is an ancient temple which is worth visiting because of historical value as well as the attractiveness. The most important site of the temple is the pagoda (Soothigara Chaithya) which is considered as constructed in the birth place of King Parakramabahu the great. It is built with bricks and there are many views regarding this partially completed pagoda.

This temple has a museum which gives out very valuable details about the temple as well as the other historical places of the area. The lamp with a shape of an elephant is a very interesting exhibit found is this museum. It reveals the knowledge of our ancestors about hydrostatic pressure and other mathematical formulae. When the oil of the lamp is reducing oil comes out of the elephant as it passes urine. Also the model structures in the museum show how the temple was in the past.

To access this one has to take Colombo-Kandy main road and it is situated between warakapola and Kegalle. Turn right at Nelumdeniya junction and the temple is about 3 km from the main road. It can be reached by vehicle and you have to walk about 300m to get there.
